Mine Action in Angola - The Role of the International Community
26 April 2017
Times:
16.00 - 17.30
Summary:
Event organised by Chatham House and held at the Houses of Parliament to explore the role of the International Community in dealing with mines in Angola.
Full Details:
When : 26th April, 2017 : 16.00 - 17.30
Where : Westminster, UK Houses of Parliament
What : Twenty years since the visit to Angola by Princess Diana in 1997 to highlight the devastating humanitarian impact of landmines left over from the civil war, Angola is still not landmine-free. Despite progress led by international NGOs such as the Mines Advisory Group and the HALO Trust, the socio-economic impact of landmines in Angola’s rural areas continues to ruin lives and prevents much-needed development and economic diversification, including in the agriculture sector.
With the ongoing commodity price downturn, Angola’s own landmine clearance efforts have been hit, whilst UK development assistance to Angola ended in 2011. As the UK commits £100 million to mine action globally over the next three years, this event organised by Chatham House will examine the role of the international community in Angola and whether the UK can once again support landmine clearance in Angola.
