Future Global Trends in Cardiometabolic Disease (Insights from Migrant Studies)
13 May 2014
Location:
University College, London
Times:
13.00 - 14.00
Summary:
This talk explores the impact of migration on health and disease, implications for health profiles of rapidly urbanising countries of origin, and likely effects on subsequent generations of these ethnic minorities in the UK.
Full Details:
The UK is home to significant migrant populations, the largest being of South Asian or of African Caribbean origin. While both populations have elevated risks of diabetes, South Asians are markedly more at risk of heart disease, while African Caribbeans appear protected. Study of the impact of migration on disease has much to tell us about the causes of disease, and why populations differ in their susceptibility.
