The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare was set up in 2008 to help the NHS fulfil its legal requirement to reduce its carbon footprint by 80% by 2050. It is now the foremost institution in the world working on sustainable healthcare in research and practice.

Recognising that the natural community of practice in healthcare is most often the specialty, the Centre has developed
It carries out research projects to develop leaner care pathways and low carbon alternatives and run the NHS Forest, to engage staff, patients and the wider community with the links between health and the environment.
