Tackling non-communicable diseases in low and middle income countries

What   : The Faculty of Publilc Health's Africa Special Interest Group (PH Africa) is hosting an interactive session at the Faculty's annual conference to review the role of UK Public Health in supporting low and middle income countries to tackle non-communicable diseases. 

Films

What   : After two years working with the American Public Health Film Festival Chairs, the Faculty of Public Health  Specialist Interest Group in Film led by Dr Uy Hoang is going it alone to present a series of films which will inspire and encourage change for a healthier future. There will be a chance at the conference to view film excerpts, hear from an expert panel of film makers/producers and public health professionals. Films include : 

  • Grace Under Fire : which follows the story of Dr Grace Kodindo highlighting the plight of women affected by fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo – presented by Global Violence Prevention SIG.
  • Modern Slavery/Forced Labour : "Slaved" by Christian Kinde and selection of modern slavery films from Unchosen present a powerful narrative of modern day slavery, helps people to spot the signs and take practical action against it.
  • Dolce Agonia (Sugar Agony) : Commissioned by El Poder del Consumidor, a consumer rights organisation, the equivalent of Which in Mexico. This documentary was filmed shortly before and after the introduction of the sugar tax in 2014.
